Updating Your Resume.

Resumes, how often should it be updated?

Most people only update their resumes once they find themselves out of work and in need of a job. For many reasons, keeping your resume up-to-date at all times is now a must for everyone.

Uncertainty is the only certainty these days, so you must always be ready for disaster or an opportunity.

Three smart resume maintenance strategies

  • Due to electronic submissions and online applications, resumes have changed drastically. Make sure your resume is searchable in resume databases, includes a target job title and the skill keywords that you see in listed in many job descriptions.
  • Most resumes are lucky to catch 6 seconds of a recruiter or hiring managers attention. Ensure that you place your keywords in the first half of the page and repeat them throughout your work experience and skills sections.
  • Once your resume is up-to-date, don’t forget to be consistent.  Ensure the same information is detailed in your social profiles such as Facebook and LinkedIn.

Keeping your resume current is part of an overall smart long-term career management strategy.

Your bible… its the most important document you own.

Everything you do as part of your career, says something about you.  From new skills and experiences, ensure that those details are part of your overall messaging in your resume.

A resume is the foundation of your brand and is your primary marketing tool. When maintained properly, a resume can open the doors to new opportunities for you.  Keep your resume current at all times because you never know when you will need it, be it for that next promotion or even a new job.
